AUDIENCE RESEARCH

Audience research for music magazine websites should focus on understanding the demographics, interests, and online behaviors of their target audience. This includes identifying their age, gender, income level, lifestyle, values, and specific musical interests, as well as how they engage with music and online content. Here's a more detailed breakdown: 1. Identifying the Target Audience: Demographics: What age group, gender, and income level is most interested in the magazine's content? For example, a magazine like Kerrang might have a younger, male-leaning audience, while NME might appeal to a slightly older, more affluent, and predominantly male audience. Interests: What types of music are they interested in? Is it rock, pop, hip-hop, or something else? What specific artists, bands, or genres do they follow? What are their preferred ways of consuming music (e.g., streaming, vinyl, live performances)? Online Habits: How do they find and consume online music content? Do they primarily use streaming platforms, social media, blogs, or dedicated music websites? What types of content do they find most engaging (e.g., articles, videos, reviews, interviews)

02 Statement of intent

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? ( approx. 400 words)

PRODUCTION:

For the magazine cover, I intend to apply the four areas of the media theoretical framework to effectively communicate meaning and engage with the target audience. Representation is key, as I will feature young, relatable artists that speak to the 16-25 age group. The magazine will reflect their values and interests, focusing on their voices and experiences. In terms of audience, I will design the cover to appeal directly to young adults, using modern typography, bold imagery, and eye-catching layouts to ensure it grabs their attention. The cover will be visually dynamic, featuring the artist as a central figure to foster connection and draw readers in. Institution theory will guide the professional quality of the cover, with a clean yet youthful design inspired by established music magazines like FADER and Rolling Stone, ensuring a balance between industry-standard aesthetics and youthful appeal. Finally, narrative theory will inform how the cover image and text work together to tell a compelling story about the featured artist. This will create a cohesive narrative that encourages the audience to engage further with the content, teasing the stories inside the magazine while also setting the tone for the issue. The cover will serve as both a visual representation and a point of entry into the larger magazine experience.

WEBSITE:

For the website, I will apply the four areas of the media theoretical framework to create a cohesive digital experience that aligns with the magazine’s brand and appeals to the target audience. Representation on the website will mirror the magazine, featuring diverse artists and content that resonates with young adults. The visual and written content will focus on issues, trends, and voices relevant to this demographic, ensuring the website feels relatable and inclusive. Audience theory will guide the interactive elements of the website, as I will create a user-friendly, engaging space where visitors can easily access content, watch exclusive video interviews, and interact with the brand. Features like pop-up subscription offers and social media links will encourage continuous engagement. In terms of institution, the website will have a sleek and professional design, using a limited colour palette of black, white, and blue to create a modern yet approachable feel. This will help establish a strong brand identity while ensuring the website feels polished. Lastly, narrative theory will inform how the website's content is organised. Each article, interview, and feature will follow a clear narrative, providing a seamless and engaging user experience. The layout will guide visitors through the content while keeping the focus on the featured artist, creating a sense of continuity between the website and the magazine, and encouraging readers to explore both platforms.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)

To show the digitally convergent nature of my media production, the magazine and website will work closely together with consistent branding and interactive features. The magazine will include QR codes and hyperlinks, guiding readers to exclusive content on the website, such as extra interviews and articles. Likewise, the website will promote the magazine, with sales links and adverts relevant to the music industry. Both platforms will feature the same front cover model and interactive calls to action (like sharing festival stories). This connection ensures a consistent brand experience across both, while also generating revenue through sales and advertising.

03 C & C production

This task is an ongoing task that may take you several weeks. There will be updates.

C & C Production and Website. (C and C stands for Codes and Conventions)

1. Start by gathering together as many examples of your chosen genre as you can. Post everything that you like to your blog, with a brief explanation of what you like about it.

2. If you notice things that happen regularly, makes a note of it as a convention.

3. If you are filling in the Website section, take a screenshot of the website because it is likely to change.

Inspiration:

Fader - The reason why I liked and felt inspired by their covers is because they are unique and simplistic. I really liked the photography and also the fact that you can only order these magazines online which is why they don't have a barcode on their front covers.

Rolling Stone- This magazine took me by interest because of their unique masthead which creates a 50s chic look to the magazine. I also liked the fact that the majority of the covers have simple coloured backgrounds which create a sense of uniformity to the magazine.

NME - This magazine inspired me as it is British based magazine company which means the majority of their artists are Uk based. I also liked that they actually broke this convention by using Rihanna on one of the front covers. The magazine also coordinates it's covers with the general aesthetic of the artists which may attract more fans of the artists.

Billboard- This magazine attracted me as they use unique colour themes which are't very typical of magazine front covers and this may attract people to want to buy the magazine. I also liked the monochrome on one of the covers as it looks original and made the blue masthead pop out at me. The artists on the covers also look natural and look as if they are in normal clothing which creates an idea of simplicity to the covers.

Muic Week- I liked the colours and the fact that the covers have many coverlines on the front of them which makes the magazine appear to be busy but also makes it clear to audiences that they cover a range of topics. I felt inpsired by the unique photography but especially by the Beabadoobee cover because of the eye catching background.

Fader- I like the contents pages by Fader as they are very simplistic and coordinate with the simplicity of their front covers, making this magazine unique in its own way. The contents pages I chose by Fader inpired me because of the monochrome used on one of them and the theme of red on the others.

Rolling Stone- These contents pages feature a large variety of different information which directly demonstrate what is featured within the magazine. The red and white that is used coordinate with the the front cover and the 50s chic vibe.

Billboard- I feel inspired by the colours used in the covers and also how big the photographs of the artists were; I also really like the photography and they have inspired me to recreate them in that way.

Mojo- I also like the photography on this cover and I like the way that the coverlines frame the artists. The simplicity and the themes on the magqazines are unique which is what stood out to me
